While working as a very successful web developer at one of the most prestigious computer software companies in the country,I decided that after working hard for twenty years at the same company anddoing a job well done, I deserved some time off. I loved my job very much and I knew this wasn't going to be my retirement but I wanted to take some time and do something that would give back to the community. I thought that maybe a great way to do that would be by volunteering atthe college I had graduated from,Columbia University. I had heard not that long ago that they needed a volunteer to teach a computer workshop program they had created for underprivileged students. I wanted to make sure the position was still available before I took any time off, so I called the university and spoke to the staff manager. She had told me that the position had still been available and the job required me to teach program development and how to get more accurate information when surfing the web. I had asked if I could call back later when I knew if I had gotten the time off work. I knew the answer was most likely going to be yes, since I had never used my vacation days.
My boss happily agreed and wished me a great six week vacation. When I called up the staff manager they sent me the schedule for the computer program and a list of all the students that already signed up for the course. I knew that the course was not going to be that difficult since most people today already knew howsurfing the internet worked and it was more of a refresher course. The main thing I was truly excited about was the fact that the job offered me the chance to give back to the college that got me to this point of success.
On the first day of my new job, everything went well. My students understood all of the courses objectives and some of them even showed the younger students howsurfing the web worked. Giving back has never felt so good.
